Meet Crystal Chun, DMD, MS
Dr. Crystal Chun is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She is committed to combining clinical excellence with compassion, cultural awareness, and a global and local perspective on care. Born and raised in Naperville, Illinois, she began her academic journey at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning a degree in Community Health and Health Administration. She went on to complete a Master of Science in Biotechnology with honors at Rush University in Chicago.
Before entering dental school, Dr. Chun embraced a life-changing opportunity—relocating to Bogotá, Colombia, where she served as the Mobile Dental Missions Coordinator for a nonprofit organization. There, she led dental brigades to underserved and indigenous communities across Colombia, an experience that deepened her commitment to service and access to care.
She returned to Chicago to pursue her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she discovered her passion for periodontics. Dr. Chun completed her specialty residency in periodontology and implant surgery at UIC. During her training, she was honored as a finalist in the AADR/IADR Hatton Research Competition for her master’s thesis on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
Dr. Chun enjoys staying involved in academia. She is on staff as an Attending at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she teaches residents in the General Practice Residency (GPR) program, focusing on periodontal topics and surgical techniques.
Dr. Chun is fluent in Spanish and Korean and loves studying language- she is deciding which new language to learn next! Outside of dentistry, she enjoys spending time with her husband and family, cooking new recipes, biking along the lakefront, traveling, and taking tennis lessons.
